Turning to more poignant, somber terrain, pianist/saxophonist JOEL
FUTTERMAN and drummer/percussionist ANTHONY MIRABILE offer their thoughts
for the world's current climate on PRAYER FOR PEACE (JDF 404) (Prayer For
Peace1/ Prayer For Peace2/ Prayer For Peace 3/ Prayer For Peace4/Prayer
For Peace5/Prayer For Peace6/Prayer For Peace7. 61:44; 11/21/03,
Norfolk,Va). This seven-section improvised session, technically broken
down into three "parts," focuses on contemplative territory. On the first
five sections, the collected"Prayer For Peace 1-5", Futterman furnishes
his richly harmonic block chords with shimmering results. Rest assured FOF
(fans of Futterman) will be glad to know that his customary, scurrying
flights of fancy are present, though the mood dictates less flash and more
heart. Regarding Mirabile, he sticks to the colorist role, frequently
wielding brushes and reacting to Futterman's effervescent structures. The
second part, the fervid "Prayer For Peace 6," focuses on Futterman's
curved soprano saxophone musings in conjunction with Mirabile's
undulations that keep the clouds swirling. The concluding part, "Prayer
For Peace 7" is arguably Futterman's most "inside" journey, that even
hints of Horace Silver, though Futterman's very personal style flickers,
as he draws the listener in with his unpredictable charm. It's all about
sincers emotion and a sense of hope sparked bt this synchronized duo.
